We Got What We Came For!
By Simon Dean
It doesn't have to be beautiful to win a football match and I think we proved that today. Let's not sugar coat it by saying how great we are, but we got the job done and we got a bit of luck on the way along with some fine saves again from Simon Hill.
Instead let's look at the positives - we had some really good individual performances - obviously today's MoM Joe Howard and John Watson put in a solid performance with Danny Calmels at CB. The whole defence was working hard again so it only seems fair to mention Andy Flood too. We made hard work of it but at times and with simple passing they were no match for us.
We needed something in the first half, being under the kosh at times. It was end to end stuff, countless balls through to Tom Mercer who chased hard to get there time after time - only to be denied by their keeper. We could, or probably should, have been 2 or 3 up at halftime...
We eventually broke the deadlock when another run took Tom Mercer 1-on-1, only to have the keeper save again. The ball found it's way to Sean Norris and with a defender hot on his tail he squared it to Simon Dean who slotted it home with the keeper back tracking.
Nirankari found an equaliser from a free kick on the edge of our box. A fine header ending up in the top corner. Maybe this was down to us turning off momentarily, it had been fairly even up to now but we looked more deadly going forward.
The second half started much the same - very good defending from us and many attempts at their goal, with some good balls across their back line from Josh Stannack. One eventually found its way to Tom Mercer and again their keeper was right on top of him waiting to pounce, but a howler of a mistake from the man with the gloves and the ball broke free for Tom to tuck away the deciding goal that had been coming for so long.
Moving forward from this we need to work on getting our foot on the ball and not trying to hit worldy passes or the 20 yard screamer - let's do the simple things well and string some passes together. That way we'll wrap up this kind of game much earlier next time.
Final Score: Nirinkari 1 - FC Hitchin 2
